*TRANSCRIPT*
We will be painting the wall, hanging the mirror and I will also be styling the dining table. Some of you may recognise the mirror that we’ve used here as the mirror that we actually made in a recent tutorial. If you haven’t seen that tutorial yet please click the link at the top of the screen. So we decided to use this space here for the mirror and to transform it because it’s our dining area and we don’t really use it so we wanted to make it look a little bit better and a bit more inviting. As you can see there’s a couple of sample patches on the wall this is because we’ve decided to paint the wall just to make the mirror stand out. So we started off by finding some samples in B&M. We went for two different shades. One was called China Clay and it was slightly warmer and the second one was called Silver Feather; both by Johnstones. So now that we can see both of the colours dried up on the wall, we’ve decided that China Clay is going to be too dark for this space. It’s dried a lot darker than what it looked like in the tester pot so we’ve decided to go for Silver Feather. So, we put masking tape all around the wall and then we cut in first and once that was all done we then filled in with a roller. We decided to go for a mid- sheen paint this time rather than the matte just because it’s the kitchen and there’s quite a lot of moisture in the air in here so we thought that the mid-sheen would be better. It would also be easier to wipe if we needed to.
So we like this colour so much we’ve actually decided to paint the kitchen cabinets the same colour. If this is something you’d like to see please make sure that you subscribe and hit the bell button so that you don’t miss it. This will actually be the third time that we’ve changed the kitchen. I’ll insert a picture of what it looked like when we first bought the house. As you can see it’s quite dated so what we did was paint the cabinets, added fablon to the work top and also painted the tiles. So this time we will do exactly the same, however instead of painting the tiles we’ve actually got some self-adhesive tiles to stick on the walls. Getting back to the dining space, once we’d finished one coat on the wall, we let that dry and then we added a second coat over the top. So once the wall was all painted with two coats and all dry we then put the brackets on the back of the frame and also on the wall. We decided to get these brackets from Amazon because they slot inside each other
so that means that the mirror would be able to hang flush against the wall. So we will have two on the back of the mirror and two on the wall and they should just be able to slot in place like this.
When using these brackets you need to make sure that you use flat headed screws because otherwise the head of the screw will get in the way and they won’t be able to slot in place. We made sure that we used shorter screws for the mirror just because we didn’t want to go through to the front of the mirror so we used short ones for that and then longer ones for the wall. We also used wall plugs just to give them that extra support. So once the mirror was all hung on the wall, I was then able to start styling the table. I began with a table runner that I got from Dunelm at around Christmas time, followed by some place mats that I’ve recently got from Amazon.
I love the colour and they’re made from a really nice natural material which I’m loving at the moment. I will add the link to these in the description box below. I then added a centre floral arrangement that I’ve actually just got from the living room as I can’t get out to get anything else. After this, I’ve added some plates, some cutlery and some wine glasses. The plates and wine glasses were from IKEA and the cutlery was Viners. And finally to finish it off, I added some napkins, which actually match the table runner so they’re from Dunelm and some napkin holders which are also from Dunelm. So by adding the mirror to this space here, it’s not only made the room look bigger but it’s also maximised the light in here. It definitely looks more inviting and hopefully we’re going to be using this space a lot more.
Before I end the video, I’m just going to include some clips of us making the DIY mirror. I’ll add the link to the tutorial in description box below so if you’d like to make your own please just click the link. It tells you exactly what we used, how we made it and it also goes through all the measurements as well. It was really easy to make and saved us a lot of money.
